Mothers Helping Mothers

La Leche League International

Ata typical meeting, a topic is pre-selected for the evening. The group leader will have materials and information on the topic prepared, and will open the floor for discussion to allow input and insight from the mothers. She will ask at the beginning of the meeting if there are any questions or concerns from anyone present. If there are, these are addressed before the chosen topic is discussed. "Lots of times we won't even get to the topic for the evening, and that's OK we just pick it up next time," says Linville.

The Connection
Keep in mind that women do not have to join the LLLI to attend the meetings, get a telephone consult, access the Web site, develop the friendships or purchase the materials from the catalog. What the membership does provide is a discount on the materials in the catalog, the newsletters and magazines (which are full of helpful tips and informative articles) and access to the lending libraries. It also gives access to the conferences and workshops, as well as being involved in the organization itself and all the opportunities that may open. The annual dues are $40.

Many mothers still keep in touch with the group even after they wean their babies. Special bonds and lifelong friendships are often formed among group members. Linville and Wayda met at the meetings four years ago and still enjoy their friendship and time spent together. They joined LLLI specifically to meet other moms and make friends, and they've grown so close that they watch each other's kids and finish each other's sentences.

How does one find these kindred spirits? To find a local group, call the toll free hotline 1-800-LALECHE or check the Web site. Also, check local phone books and hospitals, and consult your pediatrician or obstetrician.
