Is It Something You Ate?

The Art of the Elimination Diet

Healthy Eliminations

While a food product may be the source of problems for a nursing baby, it's important that the mother's long-term health not suffer from the elimination of that food.

Milk and dairy, for example, are one of the first foods eliminated when a sensitivity is suspected, but the mother needs that calcium for her ongoing bone health. In addition to taking a high-quality supplement, the mother needs to find alternate sources of calcium in other foods, such as increasing her consumption of green, leafy vegetables such as kale and spinach.

Many foods are now fortified with calcium as well. Low-acid orange juices and tomato juices are available in calcium fortified versions, and even some bread products come fortified with calcium.

This goes just as well for other foods that may have to be eliminated. If your baby doesn't seem to be able to tolerate certain vegetables, vegetables should not be entirely eliminated from the diet especially since they are a vitally important source of fiber. Again, consult with your doctor, IBCLC or a nutritionist before making any drastic dietary changes while nursing.
