A Team Approach
Breastfeeding-friendly Childcare Really Does Exist
By Sharon Waldrop
Separation anxiety is a reality, for both Mother and Baby. It's unavoidable because the bond between a mother and a baby is a strong one. Phone calls during the workday, visits during lunch hours (if possible), pictures and videos can ease the empty feelings that may pop up several times during the day. For many working mothers, envisioning the happy reunion at the end of a shift is what keeps them motivated throughout the day.
When Baby Girl Kilmer was 6 months old, a hired caregiver entered the family portrait. The caregiver was a graduate student in chemistry who would carry the baby in a sling or backpack whenever she had to report to the lab while on baby duty. She was very loving and nurturing toward Kilmer's daughter. "She has gone on to begin studying as a doula and eventually wants to be a midwife based on her experiences with my family and learning about natural parenting," Kilmer says.
It takes a team approach to get Mom back to work without sacrificing the nursing relationship. If you maintain communication, you'll learn exactly what the Kilmer's did: Everybody wins when babies breastfeed!
